SELECT represents the industry
As the authoritative trade association for the electrotechnical industry, SELECT helps to shape the market environment. By representing the industry to government, SELECT influences legislation to create industry conditions which enable Member firms to both provide a quality service to their clients and operate profitably at the same time.
The representative function involves the influencing of local and central Government (including the European Commission); involvement in setting and monitoring industry standards (such as BS7671 (IEE Wiring Regulations) committees); negotiation in industrial relations and in the contractual, technical and regulatory fields.
SELECT also promotes SELECT Members to clients and specifiers. As a result, SELECT Members are recognised and respected for the safety, quality and technical excellence of their work.
SELECT works in the best interests of Members and their clients directly, and though membership of umbrella bodies in the construction and electrotechnical industries, including the International Electrical Contractors Association (AIE).
SELECT is synonymous with high quality work
From its beginnings, SELECT has led industry standards and we continue to ensure that work carried out by Member companies is of the highest quality, employs the best of modern technology and, above all, is safe. Enforcement of the approved standards is carried out by SELECT's Inspection Service which is accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service to ISO/IEC 17020.
Membership of SELECT gives clients confidence that they are dealing with a quality contractor backed by a comprehensive range of guarantee schemes, a Charter on client complaints and a Code of Conduct with disciplinary procedures built in.
Information on latest developments and best practice is available to Members through networking and advisory services in important areas such as technical, industrial relations, commercial and contractual issues and health & safety.
SELECT members can join Constructionline, the UK’s largest register of pre-qualified construction services. It streamlines procedures by supplying the construction industry and its clients with a single national pre-qualification system.
SELECT members are entitled, also to display the Construction Licensing Executive’s influential “Licensed to Trade” logo which gives householders peace of mind in that they using a reputable contractor.
The latest addition to SELECT’s marketing and specification opportunities for members is a BSI Kitemark Licence (BS 7671 – Requirements for Electrical Installations). SELECT is the only electrical trade association to be offered partnership with BSI and reinforces the high esteem in which our membership criteria are held.
SELECT is committed to training and to lifelong learning
From our headquarters at The Walled Garden, near Edinburgh - a Scottish Qualifications Authority Approved Centre in its own right - SELECT offers a comprehensive Business Development Training Programme covering Safety & Compliance, Technical training, Financial & Commercial courses and Management & Personal Skills.
The Walled Garden is also the headquarters for Summit Skills (the Sector Skills Council for the electrotechnical industry), and the Scottish Electrical Charitable Training Trust (the industry's managing agent for Modern Apprenticeships).
At any one time, SELECT Members are training over 2,000 apprentices - more Modern Apprenticeships than any other industry in Scotland.
Management skills are provided through our HNC in Contracting Management. This is provided at Lauder College both by Part-Time attendance and Distance Learning.
Members can demonstrate safety awareness and competence through SELECT's Electrotechnical Certification Scheme Health & Safety Course. Participants who successfully complete the course assessment will be awarded a certificate which can be used to update their current ECS card.
Through participation in the Scottish educational and training establishment, SELECT works to ensure that vocational training standards and delivery continue to meet the industrys requirements for the future.
